Yes Gerard. Both the 40MZ-3i (40MZ-1i also) and new 54MZ-3 both provide
E-TTL compatibility.
The difference is the 54MZ-3 is the "cobra" style of the 550EX and can also
provide High Speed sync.
The 40MZ-3i (and 1i) are the Metz lower profile design and can do E-TTL but
not High Speed sync.
I have the 40MZ-3i and use it for Canon and non-Canon equipment since I can
change the adapter to accomodate numerous cameras. I rarely use it for the
EOS-3 only because I have 2 550EXs and like the Canon wireless capability.
