Hi Steve,
I published a short web-page about a year ago before I got the ST-E2. Needs
updating now, but I only put it together because I hadn't found the manual that
easy to follow in the very simple situation of one gun on camera and one
elsewhere in a second group. I'm sure others must have published more and better
stuff than me.

I've done some more tests since getting the ST-E2 and I've found the combination
of two 550EXs and an ST-E2 plus brollies (and of course, stands) to diffuse the
light sources, to work very well, indoors. Even without the brollies, it's
great for photos of the family which definitely look better than what you get
from a P&S!

I've also discovered that if you want your 550EXs to give equal power, it's not
sufficient to set both 550EXs to the same group, and leave the Ratio ON and set
at 1:1. (It's in the manual, but ...) You must turn Ratio OFF, otherwise the
flash exposure monitor doesn't tell the truth. With Ratio ON the system is
expecting two separately timed flashes, from two different groups of flashes...
I've also tried (fairly short range) wireless ratio flash outdoors when
photographing mushrooms last October. Certainly helped getting some modelling
into the scene.
I think you'll like the ST-E2. It makes controlling the 550EXs somewhat easier.
