Hi everyone. I ran a small test with my Elan 7 using various exposure and
flash compensation settings and thought I'd share the results. I began
taking portraits outside with my 85mm f/1.8 in program mode at exposures
around f/2.8 and 1/125. +1/2 exposure compensation with no flash was
perfect, just as anticipated. A portrait of the subject, considering its
tone, should be properly exposed at +1/2. I was somewhat surprised when I
started using flash that the camera didn't automatically underexpose the
ambient metering. This being known, results were about as
anticipated. Using no exposure compensation, -1.5 flash compensation gave
an appropriate amount of fill. Using -1/2 exposure compensation, -1 flash
compensation was required. Lastly, I took some indoor flash pictures with
the camera in manual at f/5.6 and 1/125. Somewhat surprisingly, the
pictures with no compensation came out best. Since the pictures outside in
ambient light worked best with +1/2 exposure compensation, that tells me
that the 420EX overexposes by 1/2 stop. After figuring all that out, the
outdoor fill pictures made perfect sense. No exposure compensation is
really -1/2 and -1.5 flash compensation is -1.5. -1/2 exposure
compensation is really -1 and -1 flash compensation is really -1. Do the
math and you have proper exposures. Everything is very predictabe, which
I'm very happy about. Sometime when the sun comes out, I'll try fill flash
in high ambient light to see if I can figure out the automatic flash
compensation. I'm guessing doing nothing will work best.
