My 70-200mm f/2.8L lens, on the front of a D30 camera, has become my
'workhorse' lens when shooting sports action. Depending on what the sport
is, and whether or not it's outdoor with plenty of sunlight versus indoor
with no flash, I'll add a 1.4X TC.

Even with the unforgiving hockey rink I shoot at, I can still do pretty well
with my 70-200 f/2.8L, at 200mm, f/2.8, ISO800 (i.e.,
http://www.neukranz.com ) - yes, the images come out of the D30 2/3rds of a
stop underexposed, but I can fix that in postprocessing. It's only when I
have paying customers that I spring for the $35 rental for the 200mm f/1.8L.

I didn't know I could get a used 200mm f/1.8L for $1700. But even, then, I
can do a lot of $35 rentals before I approach $1700. If my business grows
at the hockey rink, then maybe someday I'll try to track down where I can
get a 200mm f/1.8L for $1700.

I don't think photographers consider rentals as much as they should - it
really extends one's lens inventory out quite a bit without the capital
investment. Of course, I'm fortunate to live in a large (Dallas)
metropolitan area that even has this option available.

With respect to the 300mm f/2.8L lens, thanks for the offer. But anything
at f/2.8 doesn't help me beyond what I already have. Since I can't use
flash for indoor fast moving sports photography, I need lenses at better
than f/2.8. (And 300mm put on the front of a D30 is more telephoto than I
could stand at an indoor hockey rink.)

Best regards,

Bill

But Bill, an excellent-mint condition used EF 200 1.8L can be had for as
little as $1,700-$2,000. I know of an EF 300 2.8L that someone could buy
for $1,500, less with a little grinding on the buyer's part. OK, OK, it has
