Hi Collyer,

The deal with rental houses is that they take your credit card and run it
for the full amount of replacement and have you sign the slip. This is
unless of course that you've already established an account with them or can
provide a current certificate of insurance that would cover the rental
equipment from damage or loss of any kind. Rates for lenses are usually
MUCH cheaper by the week so plan you shooting schedule around the rental
period being a week. Most any EOS lens in LA can be rented for $15-$50 a
day or $75-$250 a week depending on the lens.

In SoCal. the rental houses I use are:

PRS
931 N. Highland Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90038

323.467.1212

They are in front of my color lab (so I often will rent here because it's
easy), A&I Color who I also highly recommend as they really are a world
class E-6 and C-41 color lab. PRS has the full EOS line for rent and
anything and everything else that you are likely to need. They are a full
service professional rental outfit and have ANY lights, cameras, lenses,
meters, film, batteries, tape, tools, location equipment whatever. They
keep normal business hours and standard LA rental rates apply.

PIX, Inc.
211 S. La Brea Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90036

323.936.5183
323.936.8488 one of these is bad but I can't remember which one!

One of the more unique LA rental house (and a favorite of mine), with plenty
of EOS gear for rent. Open late at night and fully stocked with anything a
pro would need in the middle of a shoot, film, tape, stands, Quantum lights,
batteries etc., the staff is full of "interesting" people, maybe on the edge
for some folks but reasonably professional all the same. Equipment is in
good shape (they have an in-house camera tech.), but not stocked as deep as
PRS or Samy's, standard LA rates apply.

Samy's Camera
431 S. Fairfax Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90036

800.321.4720
323.938.2420

Samy's Camera is sort of like the old B&H NYC store but prettified for us
California natives. Don't get me wrong, the people are almost as brusque
that famous NY store but Samy's is all new and clean and well, pretty. If
you want to spend time chatting with salesmen don't go to Samy's. They are
usually busy and won't make time to spend with you unless you come in with a
wheel barrel full of cash and intend to leave it with them. Prices at
Samy's are what I call "Dynamically Reconfigurable." This is to say that if
you DON'T ask them for a better price that they certainly WON'T volunteer to
give you even a decent price, forewarned is forearmed. Actually they aren't
so bad if you get to know one or two of the sales staff and always buy from
the same people. But they are only as loyal as your checkbook or credit
card receipts. Well worth a look upstairs at the sales counters! The
rental department is another thing altogether, professional staff, well
maintained equipment and stocked fairly deep, if you need or even just want
something they will rent it! Normal rates and business hours apply.

One word of warning though, if there are several big events going on in or
around town like the Oscars, Grammy's, a big concert, Rose Bowl etc. call
ahead and reserve the gear you want as these are all pretty popular rental
houses and because of the rates the gear tends to stay out longer than you
might expect.

Hope this helps!

Regards,

Chip Louie
