Hi Bob, The 24-85 3.5-4.5USM is par or maybe just below par with the EF 28-105 3.5-4.5USM and EF 28-135 3.5-5.6IS lenses. I've only used one sample of the 24-85 for a short time so my experience with this lens may not be representative of all of them. I really liked having 24mm at the short end a lot and, very handy for those family and scenic shots while out and about. I also found it a little soft past the outer 1/4 of the images on film though but with good chroma correction, at least better then most of the 28-105's I've used and as good as the 28-135IS lenses I've used. AFAIK the silver and black versions are the same design with different paint. The silver lens color versions were, I believe, introduced to match the EOS IX and EOS 50e/Elan IIe bodies in retro faux silver metal color.
