Nice to see another studio photographer here. I use an EOS-3 with 
a Norman system, and it works great. Some suggestions:

--use a slave system of some sort--that way you don't worry about 
damage. I use a Wein IR system. It works great, except that other 
strobes can trigger it, as well as some other lights. If I replace it, i'll 
probably go with a radio slave.

--even though the EOS-3 user manual claims you have to use a 
1/125 shutter speed setting with studio flash, I've had perfect 
results at the sync setting of 1/200. I'm not sure why Canon thinks 
studio strobes are different than on-camera flash, but I've used two 
big power packs at once, and it's fine.
