100-300 USM, I finally decided that their longer zoom ranges were not producing
the results I wanted and I bit the bullet and bought a 70-200 f4L. It produced
really good results at all focal lengths, but with a 1.4 Tamron SP converter was
a bit slow at the long end (although no worse than my previous lenses) - but
gave better results than either of my previous tele-zooms.

version. Every bit as good as the f4 but the extra stop and IS make for a truly
usable medium telephoto zoom in a wide range of conditions, even with the TC
fitted.

hiking lens (it's only half the weight! of the 2.8) and use the 2.8 for most
everything else.

Hi Gary,
Good to hear that you like your recent purchases. Whilst I'm a very strict
amateur I do appreciate good lenses and I now have a few L teles, 200 f2.8, 300
f4 and 135 f2. At the recent Focus exhibition I visited the Canon stand and did
try the 100-400 and the 70-200 but found them seriously heavy. About 15-20
years ago I carried a very heavy gadget bag around stuffed full of Minolta's
primes and two X-700 bodies. This took its toll and I suffered quite bad
shoulder pains, so now I try to restrict what I carry at any one time and I've
invested in the LowePro Mini-Trekker which carries a decent amount and is really
comfortable. Although equally well made, I found my LowePro Elite AW rather
bulky and awkward to carry, so it now stays at home.

For holiday use I restrict myself to the Sigma 17-35, EF28-135 IS USM and an
EF35 f2 with my EOS3. I can just get this in a small but thin walled Hama style
bag and with a Tamron 1.4x (which fits the 28-135) I'm quite well covered,
without being weighed down too much.
