They could just buy the license for the technology and then design
and manufacture whatever way they like, I quess?

I'm not exactly in the same boat. I'm not a pro and - with current
prices - when I buy a dSLR it will take quite many years before
I dare to upgrade it (I'm saving for other things at the same time).

Since I shoot only about 100 rolls (80-120 but increasing) a year
it would take 5-6 years before a 3000USD "investment" would pay
back in saved film. I would still need to shoot some slides along
with digital. I shoot nature whenever I can but in practice I shoot
also my kids a lot. I use EOS-3s with slide film at the moment.

After thinking several months if I should get D30/D60 or not I
have more or less decided to get a G2 instead. The main reason
is the price/performance ratio. If the D60 price was 1700 Euro
including VAT it would be no problem to get it. For more than
3300 Euro (including grip, 1 GB md and extra battery) it should
be more like an EOS-3 (AF, FEL button, exposure scales, fps, etc.)
to satisfy me. Also the D60 noise levels ISO400 or higher make
me think (haven't printed D60 images yet but will do soon).

Why is G2 good enough, at the moment? For me there are two
*main* advantages in digital:
- instant feedback especially in multiflash photography and
- (shooting) cost savings.

The G2 is Canon EX-flash compatible including the ST-E2 so
the first advantage is there. I can check the exposure with
G2 and shoot film after that if I like to do that. Works with
manual flashes, too.

Cost savings is a bit more problematic since nature photography
for what the G2 is not good wastes lots of film (animals etc.).
So the cost savings must come from elsewhere and that will be
the family shooting for what the G2 will be fine *most* of the
time.

If I bought a D60 now and then upgraded it to a "D6" in "couple"
years I would easily loose that 1000 Euro what the G2 costs.
An additional "benefit" is that the G2 will be left as a second
digital camera for P&S and other family use.

If I had more money to use in photography (or no family) things
  would be different.
If I were a pro I would think differently.
If I had possibilities to photograph more I would also think
  differently.

Vesa
