One of the many lesser known uses of A-DEP mode is to conduct experiments
to determine these parameters for specific situations.

For instance, set up where you want to take portraits from and, at the
desired focal length, use A-DEP to focus 1. on eyes of subject, then 2. on
ears of subject (if thats what you want sharp. In some instances it may be
the nose and eyes, or an ear and far cheek. Then check the aperture the
camera gives you. You may then want to open or close an extra stop or two
for flexibility or effect as desired.

As with many things, a little thought before jumping in sometimes pays big
dividends.
