I work at a newspaper use D30's every day and had a chance to work with a
D60 this week when a Canon rep came by the paper. Based on my short time
with the D60, I think the AF is faster. It's not an EOS3, 1V or 1D (all
of which have screaming fast AF) but it is closer to the A2. However,
the D60 is MUCH better in low light or with low contrast subjects than
the D30.
Overall the D60 is a superior camera. The AF performance is improved,
maybe not as much as we would like, but it is better. Everything else
about the camera though is much better.
The initial shutter lag is greatly reduced, so the camera feels more
responsive.
The buffer is bigger and it handles files better (it can write while the
camera is shooting) so when you can shoot larger bursts you can resumes
shooting more quickly, if you pause during bursts you can shoot even
longer. (And this is in spite of the fact that the files are twice as
large as the D30 files)
The image quality is still stunning, just as you would expect. But now
you've got lovely 18 mg files to work with. The color is very accurate
and virtually noise free (IMO) up to ISO 400. Noise increases but is not
objectionable even at 800 or 1000.
I was greatly impressed with the D60, especially when you consider it's
only $2100 (US). I think the only thing you give up moving from the D30
to the D60 is ISO 1600. If you shoot a lot of available darkness or
indoor and night time sports this will be a problem.
