I certainly didn't mean to imply that it wouldn't also meet many pro's
needs. In fact, for many working pros digital has become the medium of
choice, though not necessarily the medium of preference. I suspect that
there will always be some preferences for film in certain modes of work
since there are qualities (Velvia's SPECIFIC saturation and tonal qualities,
for instance) that are extremely hard, if not impossible to replicate in the
digital darkroom. For that reason, I and many others will always want to
retain the ability to use film. It remains to be seen, however, if that
demand will remain high enough to keep Fuji, Kodak, et al. producing film
products. 20 years on one can still find cassette tapes sold in major music
stores, but the section is growing smaller every day. Vinyl crossed over to
the domain of extreme esoterics.
For the folks I know who are more than casual photographers (pro or
amateur) and who are considering crossing over, the single unifying
impediment to their doing so remains the initial cost (camera, mem card,
quality printer, software, and in some cases even computer literacy), NOT
whether the quality has reached the convincing point. Many reached that
point with the D30 and many more are now dying to put a D60 in their kit!
Again, one has to ask the question: "Just when was the last time I needed
30+ inches of output at the absolute highest quality resolution because my
portfolio is going to hang in the Googleplex Art Gallery?" If the answer is
NEVER, or seldom, well, then don't let some esoteric twit talk you out of
digital simply because it "doesn't add up" in his calculator. Go out and
SEE some quality digital work, hopefully somewhat like your own methods and
modes, with your own eyes. THEN you'll really know if digital is really
worth its investment.
