I find my E-TTL 550EXs and ST-E2 work very well and balance flash / ambient nicely. I find I rarely use flash exposure compensation. For very reflective objects I use FEL. Most often I use default values. The body I use is EOS-3. Someone previously questioned the flash cycle time on 550EXs - I find it is slow with alkaline batteries, but I usually use NiMH batteries. I find NiMHs cycle the 550EX pretty fast (much quicker than alkaline). I have rarely lost a shot due to slow cycling. OT. I notice if I use off camera flash in my big softbox I need to add +1/3 stop to flash output.
