Hi, I Have a 100-300/4.5-5.6 USM. I am very satisfied with it. It is much cheaper than those you mention, but some say, that it is not so goo optically. It has some advantages. 58mm filter thread, non rotating front element, little weight.
I use it for portraits, mostly candid, but sometimes people recognise my intention.
