If it is still under warranty, you might want to send
it in to Canon.  Otherwise, it might retirement time
for it as the repair will probably exceed the cost of
the lens.  

Somewhere on the web, someone dismantled their
non-working 28-105 (Mark I) and found that the
mechanisms were very poorly built and that this
contributed to the lens' early demise (anyone jump in
and let us know where this site is).  These 28-105 are
not built to "pro" standards so continual use and
abuse will cause them to break.  IIRC, a critical part
of the lens relied on a plastic rivet/pin which can
shear off.  Perhaps your lens is at the beginning
stages of this shearing off.  The Mark II version
might have solved this issue - (anyone correct me if
I'm in error for believing this).  

If Canon is listening, I for one would like a pro
version of the 28-105 - perhaps it could have a good
seal against dust and the elements, a fixed f3.5 (f2.8
would be nicer of course) and a harder wearing body
and lens extension mechanisms.
