I've heard that too, but I've yet to read of anyone who ran a
side-by-side test of any lens in black and in white to see if internal
temperature variations are significant or actually do effect performance at
all.

Nikon has a few lenses available in black or pale grey. They include:
300mm f/4 DAF-S ED-IF
400mm f/2.8-D AF-S ED-IF II
500mm f/4.0-D AF-S ED-IF II
600mm f/4.0-D AF-S ED-IF II
28-70mm f/2.8 D-AFS
80-200mm f/2.8 D-AFS ED-IF
