The big item to remember is that tax is added in sequence:
1. Cost of Item + Shipping
2. Import Duty
3. VAT (Sales Tax)
4. You  will also have to pay a charge for the up-front payment of import
duties to the importer (Fedex, UPS, etc).

Work all this out before ordering, especially from USA as (UK) Customs are
hot on those. Also remember that, since 11 September, security checks will
hold up delivery.

Better to order within the EC as all you have to pay extra is the delivery
charge.
