The lens choice is my problem. I have basically narrowed it down to two
Cannon lenses.
The 28 - 135 F3.5 - 5.6 IS lens, and the 28 - 70 2.8 L lens.

Steve,

If you need the wide open F2.8 aperture get the 28-70mm F2.8L. You can also
opt for less exoensive alternative but the Canon has the faster and quieter
AF.
If you are not in need of F2.8, then the 28-135mm IS is the best choice. I
have used this lens since its debut and it has been a solid performer. All
photographs taken with it are sharp. Unless you always use a tripod and then
enlarge your prints to 30x40 you will not see any difference in the
photographs taken with the 28-135mm v. the 28-70L at the mid apertures (F8).
I know owners of the 28-70L may flame me for this but that is the truth.
Yes, the 28-70L is very solid and made of metal while the 28-135mm is more
plastic, but my 28-135mm has taken quite a beating over the last 3 years and
is still working flawlessly. IS also helps me handhold the lens at 1/15th
seconds at F8, something that would be difficult for the 28-70mmL without
Image stabilization.
