I'm in the exact same position. Same camera; same delimma. Except that I've
figured I'd save my pennies until I could afford the Canon. What I can't get
a handle on is how much difference there is between whatever the best
non-Canon zoom is in this class and the genuine Canon article. If it's
discernable (whatever that means), then I'll continue to save my pennies. If
it's not unless I enlarge an image to 24x36, then maybe I'll go with the
non-Canon lens and buy a used car with what I save.
