Chris: Agree that buying a meter on Thursday for an event on Saturday will only be a disaster - especially if you want to enjoy the event! I use 1v's, along with Gossen (old Luna Pro) and Sekonic 608, and find that the 1v metering is quite reliable an doffers little over the 608. (As long as you think for it once in a while.) You won't get any better averaging or spot functions with a 608 than is in the 1v. IMHO the only losses are studio flash (duh! gee Canon, you mean all pros dont have studios equipped with 550EXs?) and incident.
