Light loss might be a factor (see manuals for extension tubes), but TTL will
compensate.  I don't know if slower shutter speed or faster film/digital ISO
would work for you, as you did not specify subject matter, lighting
conditions, hand-held vs. tripod, etc.

Focusing will be different with either close-up accessory lens or extension
tube.  As I understand it, both might limit range of focus (i.e. no infinity
focus), whether with zoom or prime lens (not important in close-up shots,
though), so I would suggest manual focus either way.

I have no evidence to support this, but I suspect more advanced/pro shooters
use extension tubes than use close-up lenses.
