August is not one of the best months to sell gear. A lot of people are on
vacation and even those who have returned have spent the money on vacation.
However, it is usually a fairly good season to buy. Some people sell their
old gear to buy that lens/camera they just have to have to take shots of
that memorable trip they are going to leave for. At least it's how it works
(more or less) on this corner of the globe. If you've noticed I just put my
bellows on sale. There's a photo shop where I live that's selling some gear,
in "as new" condition, that I would love to have for really low prices. It's
a double edge sword really, unless you have the money to buy the gear and
sell your's at a better time.
Generally speaking, prices at eBay are low right now. I do believe that
world economics have a big role in this price depression. I would
definitelly not advise anybody to sell their gear with a "no reserve" price
or a low starting bid, at this time. They might have an unpleasant surprise.
You can always try eBay UK. Items there, generally sell for a higher price.
The downside is that your item is less exposed. I also have the feeling that
British people are not too keen to buy outside UK (same thing seems to go
for Americans).
Best of luck for your auctions.
