I have used a D9 connector. It is not small but not too large
either and as it has plastic covers the weight is low enough.
D9 connectors can also be screwed together which makes it more
reliable. The only problem might be the lack of good water
resistancy.

I have also bad experience on 3.5mm stereo plugs. I have tried
also DIN connectors (the old ones which are used in MIDI interfaces)
but they are not very durable either.
