I frequently use an early 28-70 non L lens that was discontinued about 10
years ago. I picked up the lens used. It's non- USM but fast focusing, and
the barrel rotates and sinks into the outer barrel, which can be problem with
some filters. However, the lens is solid, very compact, and very good
optically. In 11x14 enlargements, it's not quite an L, but very acceptable. I
use this lens because it's small, light and makes a good companion to the
70-200 f4 L.
