Begging the question, what is 'big glass', this business of 'no AF' in
Ray's original reply

Let me be more specific. I am actually thinking (just thinking) about
getting a 500 or 600 F4 IS lens...a big commitment...but my interest in
nature photography has really been growing rapidly. With that comes the need
to invest in better camera support as well.

I am currently shooting with an Elan 7 and with all the above expense would
prefer not to replace it..I am quite happy with it. I can live with
incomplete weather sealing and I tend to treat things gently. If the
autofocus is a bit slower I can live with that at this point...is it just
slower, or also less accurate than a 3 with this type of lens? At the
current time I will just use with a 1.4x to keep autofocus...probably best at
first until I actually learn to handle this monster well. Later I can use a
2x and think about a 3. Any other reasons not to use these lenses with a 7?

Howard
