You're right, I also believe this is the reason for the FP mode
being OFF by default. But in most cases the loss in flash 
output should not be a problem, since high-speed sync is
not used in poor lighting. The FP mode is used mostly for
fill-in flash in strong lighting with the aperture wide open (for 
example when you take a portrait in strong sunlight and
you want the background to be blurred).
