If youre SURE youll eventually get the 1.4, why spend money on the
1.8? Save, or find yourself a second-hand 1.4!

To be more specific, I do own the 1.4 (bought recently to supplement my
28-135 on the D60 for low-light situations). I like it, especially the
full-time manual focussing (D60 doesnt shine in low light AF, and I
dont want to disturb people by using the help light, so I often focus
manually). I find it quite usable fully open, and very good already at 1.8.

Focus ring doesnt feel as good as on the 28-135, but it is vastly
superior to that on the 1.8 lens, which has no quality feel at all.
Optically, I cant compare them, since I never took any pics with the 1.8.

I *think* that somebody needing a very compact, very cheap 50mm lens
that he never needed to focus manually, might be content with the 1.8,
but if youre already leaning towards the 1.4, the 1.8 will be a
dead-end alley on your way there...
