Wether you choose to believe it or not, Canon does
indeed recommend against using IS on this lens when
tripod mounted.  I had not heard the story about
burning out the IS mechanism, however.  The common
explanation seems to be that under certain
circumstances the IS mechanism can introduce vibration
of its own.

I'd suggest trying some test shots with and without IS
on, and see what you find.
