It stays on. I can hear it on my 300/2.8 and clearly see the effect when
mounted on a tripod with some wind or other movement. (IS is a lifesaver
when the lens is mounted on a tripod head on a car bracket on the window and
others move in the car - keeps the image rock steady. I can't understand how
people can argue against IS on long teles)
