I think the reason you don't see it mentioned is this
message board seems to be used mainly by either pros
or "wana-be pros" (wealthy amateurs). Red rings are
mandated in the conversation.
Not red rings, good lenses. So, the EF 1.8/50 mm mk I
is one of my favorites - and ceratinly the cheapest
in Canons line-up.

BTW, Jim, are you talking about 20-35/3.5-4.5 or 20-35/2.8L ?
I figured out Photodo rates it quite high (20-35L) at 3.5 and Photozone
rating says nothing but praising it and mentioned "slight distortions" on
both ends which is very adorable for such wide angle.
Yes, this is a very fine piece of glass and craftsmanship.

However you guys point out that there is no USM facility which is bad.
I can't say that I miss it too much.

I understand lacking USM I would loose FTM convenience, right ?
Exactly.

Chip advised about 16-35 which sounds to be a killer,
It is, but since the 20-35 L is so good, I am rather
tentative to shell out that much money for a wide angle
range that I rarely use - and might not use anymore once
I have an EOS-1Ds.

You also advocate for 20-35/3.5-4.5 USM
In comparison to the 20-35 mm L only if you are very
tight on budget or can't find a used L glass.

Fast, reliable, cheap. Pick any two of the three.
