I don't own either of the two lenses but here is my thought. For your application you are probably not going to use the lens fixed on a tripod but handhold, on a monopod, or panning on a tripod. At 300mm and possibly with a 1.4x blurr due to shake becomes much more likely. This is where the IS can improve your pictures a lot. Even if the non-IS is a bit sharper it's likely that many of your pictures will turn out sharper with the IS. Of course IS doesn't help you if you have to move your lens around in different directions but I am doubtful that in this case you could make out the difference of the IS and non-IS. Personally, I would go for the IS but people who have owned both of these lenses might have a different opinion.
