The reasons I chose the 50/1.4 was not sharpness, nor speed. It was USM, FTM, and a real focus ring. Yup, all about focus. The reasons one might choose the 50/1.8 are price and compactness. So if you have the later, you have to ask yourself if the former's merits are worth a couple hundred bucks to you.
