I wonder if there are any differences between the different production years. 
As far as I can tell, this lens seems to have the same design and technology 
today as when it was released. Does this mean that one should look for another 
option instead?

I have also been told that the IS function on this particular IS lens does not 
support panning, meaning that it will record the panning movement as a 
lensmovement and then try to compensate resulting in even softer pictures than 
this optical design already gives. Compared to the 100-300 USM, the IS version 
is said to have no FTM, a rotating front lens, and extends when zoomed.

Sounds like an annoying lens in many ways.....
