Please excuse my ignorance but I keep hearing that D30/D60 has poor AF

The same chassis? I'm not sure what you're asking.

The EOS 1D and 1Ds cameras have bodies and autofocus systems based around the EOS 1V.

The EOS D30 and D60 cameras are not directly based on any film camera, though rumours abound that their autofocus systems are based around those used on the EOS Elan II/50/55 or the EOS Elan 7/30/33. As far as I know I don't think Canon have ever confirmed either rumour.

As to why the D30 and D60 have such lousy autofocus, nobody knows. Presumably Canon wanted to cut costs and to get pros buying the 1D and 1Ds instead, so they chose to hobble the D30 and D60 AF performance. Since the D60 has been discontinued we'll presumably soon see whether its replacement has improved AF abilities. Let's hope so!
