Okay, I'm sure this has been bandied about before, but with the advent of
the 1Ds maybe it's time to revisit. The file sizes possible here are big
enough, finally, to match my typical scan, but I'm curious as to what the
markets are actually accepting.

I'm currently shooting all film (Canon 1v), primarily Nature & Travel
photography. I scan when I need to, but that is time consuming. I'm
attracted by the convenience of going digital with the 1Ds, but wonder what
impact that will have on the marketability of my
work.........................

 Hi Paul,

I'm finding in Australia that acceptance of digital format is almost
complete, with very few still insisting on trannies. Certainly in the
editorial magazine area where I do most work it is now preferable due to
savings not only in film and processing but also in preproduction. The
quality required for front cover and dps work has really only been delivered
with the release of the 1Ds so I now see the road to digital as fairly
clear. I am actually expecting to take delivery of a 1Ds in the next week
but at this stage can only afford the one as the 4 extra 512mb CF cards and
notebook computer make a big hole in the pocket. I will be using the 1v as a
backup initially and have an understanding with my clients that if any
problems are encountered on a digital shoot I will be resorting to film to
finish the job.

I actually took a cd of test images up to a lab this morning where the owner
has a digital front printing on traditional Kodak paper. I had him print
them all as 4" x 6" postcards as this is a format I use for private
trackside work in large numbers. The prints are every bit as good as normal
(high quality) minilab output with no sign of colour drifts or variations. I
think I had better use all the film in the fridge quickly as it is not going
to get much of a look in shortly....
