Marc,

both lenses are excellent.

A typical portrait lens ranges from to 80mm to 135mm.
For 35mm, the 70-200 fits the bill. With the 1.6x
factor of the digital body, it can be a bit long,
unless outdoors. It is tad heavy, too, which makes
it a bit more of a challenge for those candit handheld
portraits, but then again, I would recommend a
tripod for better sharpness for almost any type of
photography.

The 50 "looks" like an 80mm on the 10D. It is a nice
sharp, lightweight, compact lens, and two stops
faster than the 70-200.

If you look at my portrait portfolio at

    http://www.larsmichael.com/cgi-bin/portfolio?series=classic_portraits

nearly all of the photographs were done with the
70-200, digital or not.

Regards,

Lars
