Just back from the friend of mine who owns Minolta gear shooting with
his Maxxum 9. We were playing with our gear to figure out that the 9's
AF sensors turned to be much more sensitive to low-contrast pattern
(especailly in dim lighting) then these of my EOS-3.
this Minolta has locked quite firmly on white wall with barely
noticeable
streaks of dirt on it with 28-105/4-5.6 lens attached (at 70mm so I
giess it was somewhere around f5.0 after some short hunting, while my
EOS-3 with 28-70/2.8L attached couldn't lock at all hunting all
around(actually back-forth and stop). Both cameras have been set to
central AF point that is presumably the most sensitive in both systems.
I'm confused even more bearign in mind the Minolta did teh job time
afetr time with much more slow lens while EOS-3 at f/2.8 wasn't up to
the task at all. :-(
Usually, my system is working great, when there is sufficient contrast
teh AF performs admirably producing cutting-edge sharpness.
Perhaps there is necessary to recalibrate or fine-tune the AF
sensitivity (or algorithms) in my EOS-3 to achieve better low-light,
low-contrast AF lock ? What do yuo think ?

P.S. We blocked the AF assist light of Maxxum 9 (it has one built-in
into the body) to ensure similar conditions for both systems.

Alex
