I think Henning it this one bang on the head.
Also being up in Canada, I've seen this sort of excessive charges and I
know it's not the retailer's fault but the gouging that happens by the
courier companies. Even our postal services charges an extra $5.00
"handling" fee.

My solution to this problem is to either have a friend (who flies up to
Toronto regularly) pick up my "order" from B&H and bring it to me or I take
a yearly vacation to the NYC/CT area to visit the same friend and I cart it
back myself. Even if I pay state sales tax, it's still cheaper than having
to pay fedex shipping rates and brokerage fees.

Cheers,
Dave

Henry, I don't think that Tim is wrong. Not to put words in his
mouth, but I believe he is talking about the full amount of charges
he has to pay, not what B&H receives. There are basic unit handling
charges that are added to every international shipment at the
receiving end that must be paid.

I recently bought a couple of items from B&H, which consisted of a
lens and a CF card, and I also received two packages. B&H didn't
charge me extra for using two packages, but each package was assessed
a minimum handling fee by FEDEX for bringing it across the border; in
this case, to Canada. This handling charge or brockerage fee was an
extra purely due to there being two parcels instead of one. There is
no duty on these items, but our government wants its cut of
everything, so we have to pay federal and provincial tax, and FEDEX
has to fill out paperwork and collect this, and they charge for that.

I imagine the situation is similar when shipping to Australia.
