IMHO he probably got password stolen and account hijacked by a scammer.
A couple of weeks ago I got an email that looked like it was from eBay.

The subject said:

FPA NOTICE : Sign in to your account using the fields in this e-mail to keep it
activated due to our recent security checks

The user would login to eBay using the embedded forms and the scammer would have
his password. The scammer would then change the password and the account email.
If the owner did not check and try to log in, they would never know.

Watch for accounts with the shades icon or email from a seller that does not
match what ebay sends (in case they try to avoid detection by not changing the
email).

BTW, Ive also received a similar email from someone attempting to get my PayPal
password. Watch out!
