Hi Dave,

I like paper. It's light (portable), cheap, easy to buy in a variety of
colors, it can be easily modified with spray paint or your favorite spackle
spray. When it gets dirty you can recycle it by adding other old paper or
cellophane or crepe paper or whatever to get something new. Or you could
simply roll out some more and cut it off.

Muslin I don't like so much, too bumpy, can't be used with fans, always
looks wrinkled (to me anyway), harder to light well though they can give you
more lighting options with translucent materials. I don't know, I never
really liked it so much but it is cheap like paper.

Ah, good hand painted canvas backgrounds are expensive, heavy (less
portable), more or less fixed in color and texture at the time they are
painted and they eventually crack, wear and get soiled though this should
take a long time unless you travel with them or they are handled a lot. The
up side of a good hand painted canvas is that it LOOKS fantastic, are very
easy to get classic looks from with simple 3 light set ups (okay maybe 4
with a hair light), and the look is very hard to replace in terms of what
you can get on film.

You can also buy heavy canvas and paint them yourself. This works pretty
well if you have even minor skill at painting, the key thing is to get the
central shape and size of the highlight area of the background right if you
like this style. Of course I have seen inexpensive painted canvas
backgrounds at the camera shows starting at $50 which seems really cheap to
me but they look okay.

Cheers/Chip
