Canon's RAW converters are not worth using if you want to get the best
images out of your RAW files. And after all you MUST want to get good
images because you chose to shoot RAW.

Chip,
Are your lack of CANON results the same with the LINEAR RAW conversion as with the standard conversion? I am assuming you aren't as the Linear leaves it all to you and your Photoshop. I have read recently that linear conversion is really the only way to go if you want absolute control. Otherwise we are leaving it up to Canon, Capt1, BB, or Y, and I'm not disputing your results there.

After RAW conversion, however you do it, you already lost some information. A RAW conversion tool can do things you can't do in a converted TIFF file, be it 8 or 16 bit per color. A RAW conversion tool does - besides other things - the interpolation to get an RGB image out of the RGBG pattern. I can imagine there are different ways to do that interpolation, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. So, while you can do a lot with a linear converted 16 Bit TIFF file in Photoshop, there are still things that have to be done earlier in the conversion process. In a way, we are really leaving it up to Canon, Capt1, BB or whatever conversion program we use, at least partially.
