Subject: EOS Super fast AF with 2,8 L Lenses

It seems to some pro (film) bodies (like Eos 1 & 3) have super fast AF on
the middle focus point if the lens is 2,8 or below. Is this true?

How is this with digital bodies. Is this only on the 1D(s)?

Does this justify investing in L Lenses 2,8 or below? In other words how
big in % is the AF speeds with an Eos 1 and a 2,8 or an 5,6 lens.

-----------------

Yes. I go back and forth using my Canon EF 28-70 f/2.8L and my Canon EF
28-105 f/3.5-4.5 zooms, depending on the situation. If I need a small
light-weight lens, that gives me more reach, then it's the 28-105 I use.
But if I'm going to be in a low-light situation, regardless of f-stop I plan
to use, I've learned I have to take with me the 28-70. There is a marked
improvement in AF performance with the 28-70 zoom in low light. In fact,
there are many situations where I cannot get AF lock with the 28-105 that I
can easily get with the 28-70 - with the same camera body. It's easy to
feel the 'snap' of the AF with the 28-70 vs the 28-105 in less than bright
light, again, without regard to desired aperture.

I shoot with both a 10D and a 1D. I've noticed the above without regard to
camera body's AF capability.

It's hard to judge the worthiness of investment. The 28-70 zoom is
substantially more expensive than the 28-105 or the 28-135 f/4.5-5.6 IS. I
think it depends on each person's needs.

Best regards,

Bill
