That has happened to me on many occasions, the restriction is that the
counter agent does not realise the limited size of the overhead lockers.
Most times I have to deposit my carry-on baggage in the hold and
retrieve it on departing the aircraft.

In this day and age of high security levels it does not pay to get into
a dispute with any airline staff. Just use a bit of common-sense when
packing for a trip can save a lot of stress.

Talking of packing.............. I'm off to Mallorca for a week..... now
where will I fit that 17-40?
