Trying to navigate San Francisco in a car will NOT be a pleasant experience,
I'd recommend BART/Metro or even the Trolley Car, but not a car.

As for places to buy camera gear with a good selection and good prices,
forget it. Gasser's is strictly list price and snobbish, Calumet is NOT
cheap either, there are a number of smaller shops but overhead is high in a
city where 600 square foot walk ups start at $2500/mo.

Much better to bring the equipment he already ahs and use it to capture the
experience of one of the most cosmopolitan and fun places in the US.
