Its OK, I also noticed such trend, though it certainly wouldn't be my own case. Hoowever this can be easily realized. Most people visiting US are coming from European countries or others where the prices for a fine photo/video gear are just extraordinary comparative to these in US. In many cases the visit is a matter of on-time-in the life opportunity to go there or are quite rare occasions. That leads to the idea ot trying to squiz within time limits of staying in US the sightseeing as well shopping, and again, being quite restricted in traveling time slot, and and people rushing between each other activity often sacrifice sightseeing in favor of shopping. As for me for instance, once splashing my hard earned cash for a proven Canon setup a year ago that is aimed to serve me thoughout years, I "settled down" on shopping shopping abroad in favor of sightseeing and memorizing the feelings on my pictures. Going to the trip I do careful planning for the places to be shot, better time slots to cover (say, sunset , sunrize...) and come back loaded with the rolls of exposed slides with great anticipation of the results, instead of full of bags with stuff bought abroad and much lighter wallet. :-) BTW, I rememerb SF visiting abot two years ago on my business trip to Santa Clara - also had about half day off for a strool across the city - but this is another story I'll have pleasure to share here on the List in separate mail (related to photography as well).
