Has anyone had a problem with their EOS 28-135 IS Zoom having the zoom mechanism binding at the 35mm focal length. Mine is about 15 months old, used moderately but never dropped. When I go from 28 to above, there is a catch in the mechanism which sounds and feels like a broken bearing or gear. Once I get beyond that point, zooming is smooth. I took it to an authorized Canon dealer in Washington, DC (Strauss - highly regarded pro shop here) who said they would have to send it back to Canon, and estimated a repair price of $180 for disassembly and repair.

Is there anyway the zoom mechanism can be inspected and repaired for less than that?
