The BP-8 sounds like the best idea - I have one on my Rebel G. It requires
that the battery door be open all the time (it fits around it). Not having a
battery door is an excellent reason to buy one. And after that you'll be
able to use regular AA batteries on your camera (I go a decent distance on
regular Duracells). Your camera will also fit better in your hand.

I don't think I've taken mine off since I fitted it, except to change the
(AA) batteries.

I checked, you get them on the usual auction sites for less than $30.
