So, is $1200-1500 worth an upgrade from film to digital?
You could just as well buy a used D30 or D60 and spend quite a bit less than that... D30 prices seem to have settled down in the $500-600 range (I got a nice one for $400) and D60's hover around a little less than $1k. I would recommend the D60, as it focuses quite a bit better in low light and the color is a lot better. But you will get perfectly acceptable photos with a D30.
My guess is that if you do go digital you will end up shooting a lot more... that was certainly my experience. It's VERY liberating to be able to shoot and not worry about wasting film. I find I experiment a lot more with digital than I ever did with film, and definitely enjoy the process of photography more (I am in total agreement with the poster that said he spends more time with photography now.) If more enjoyment is what you are after, digital is a great way to get there.
