Thus, the in-warranty repairs were honored (at no charge) via Canon USA because of what Canon USA referred to as the 1D international warranty. I'd have to assume that with something like the 1D, it wouldn't matter where you were in the world, as long as there was a Canon factory-level service center available (and in-warranty fixes were needed) that the service center in question would honor the international warranty.
Again, this is according to what the Canon USA service center representative told me and how my 1D in-warranty repairs were handled by them. (Again, with no specific USA warranty on this camera when purchased).
Canon USA is particularly good about this. There have been long threads reporting that Canon USA will do warranty service on a "grey market" item provided the end-user has a receipt from the retailer showing the item's purchase date would otherwise make the warranty valid. I also know that Canon independent authorized service centers are under no obligation to follow Canon USA's suit.
