A quick bit of calculation shows that the new 1D MkII may not only be
a boon for those who like wide angle shots, but still good for telephoto
shots as well. The Mk II's sensor size of 28.7 x 19.1 (3504x2336/8.2mp)
compared to the 10D/300D's 22.7 x 15.1 (3072x2048/6.3mp) sensor
shows that a crop of the 1DII/1D.2 [new acronyms :) ] image to the
same size as the 10D's would result in a 2271 x 1847 image (5.1mp).

That's based on physical sensor size, not pixel count, to get (IMO) a
valid comparison....

Ok not quite the same as the 10D, but it shows that the time-honoured
practice of cropping part of the image would still work nicely here, and I
would guess that the larger individual sensor cells (CMOS too!) would result
in an image with even smoother tonal ranges and less noise than the 10D.

Plus you have 8.2mp at only a 1.3x crop - good for wide angles and also
any shot that requires little or no cropping!

Of course the occasional PJ may choose to buy one too :)
And yes, I'd still like a 1Ds, but....

Cheers
Gary
